The Real World: Hawaii is the eighth season of MTV's reality television series The Real World, which focuses on a group of diverse strangers living together for several months in a different city each season, as cameras follow their lives and interpersonal relationships.
Assignment[]
The seven housemates worked at the Waikiki Location of Local Motion, a clothing and surf apparel store. They were responsible for booking in-store entertainment under a company they christened "7 Strangers Productions."
Residence[]
The cast resided in a 4,095-square-foot (380.4 m2), single-story, three-bedroom, four-bathroom house at 3169 Diamond Head Road in Diamond Head, Hawaii. The property's two-story guest house housed the control room and production offices during the filming. At the time of the filming of the series, the Diamond Head House rented for $10,000.00 a month, and was listed for sale for $7,500,000 in 2006. By March 2008, both houses were torn down, and new building permits were issued in February 2008.

Legacy[]
The Real World: Hawaii was notable for the cast's uninhibited views on sexuality and nudity, even from the first episode. When Teck and Ruthie realize they’re the first roommates to arrive at the house, they decide to remove their clothing and go skinny-dipping in the pool, stating they have no fears or reservations with regards to being naked. In her confessional, Ruthie says “I don’t care if they see me naked; I’m in Hawaii. I’m at home.” Housemate Kaia, upon her arrival, joins Ruthie and Teck by removing her clothing and swimming, saying “…if people are comfortable enough to go skinny-dipping, I’m going to be just fine here.” In later episodes, Ruthie and Kaia are casually seen wearing little to no clothing around the house, leading to Hawaii being dubbed a more ‘liberal’ Real World season, compared to its predecessors.
On a serious note, there were concerns over Ruthie’s excessive drinking. During the season premiere, the roommates all go out clubbing to celebrate moving in to the house, where Ruthie is seen taking numerous tequila shots. Once the group makes it back home, she ultimately ends up laying down and vomiting in the shower. When fellow roommate Amaya holds her hair back and attempts to comfort her, Ruthie—in her blacked-out state—simply says, “shut up, you b*tch”. This hard-partying trend continues for several episodes, resulting in Ruthie leaving the house to enter an alcohol treatment program; this event was cited as one of the series' memorable moments by Time magazine.
